Asafoetida (Ferula asafoetida, Food of Gods, Devil's dung)

Today's post is about an interesting ingredient very popular in Indian cuisine. I do not know how many of you have heard about Asafoetida.

Asafoetida resin is a gum-like material, that is made by solidifying the juice that extrudes out of the cut roots of Asafoetida plant. Asafoetida is widely used in cooking in India particularly as a flavor enhancer. One such popular dish in Kerala is Sambar. It is a concoction of spices, grated coconut, its oil, mixed with vegetables and asafoetida is an important ingredient in it. Apart from rice, dosa, idli etc. are traditionally eaten along with sambar.

Raw Asafoetida has a strong, intense fetid smell. Once a tiny quantity of it is heated with ghee or oil it imparts a wonderful flavor to the dish.

In addition to the culinary uses, it has lots of medicinal uses as well.
  • Antiflatulent
  • Cholesterol-lowering agent
  • Blood thinner
  • Antiepileptic
  • Contraceptive/Abortifacient
However, there is a lack of scientific data about its use as a medicinal substance. Besides, it is used as a moth/mosquito repellent. It is said that Afghans put a small quantity of Asafoetida in their shoes to repel snakes. I remember reading somewhere that water admixed with asafoetida promotes the growth of vegetables. Worcestershire sauce contains asafoetida.

Ancient Ayurvedic literature has detailed descriptions of its medicinal uses. It is available in two forms. As a fine powder that is a mixture of asafoetida, gum arabic and rice powder. The Asafoetida gum as such is amber colored and is very hard in consistency.

Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo - a movie review

Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, is a comedy movie directed by Mike Mitchell.

Rob Schneider acted in the lead role as a gigolo in this movie. I laughed a lot watching this film on cable TV, the other day.

Here is the synopsis of the plot:

Deuce Bigalow is a fish tank cleaner who met Antoine, a Russian gigolo, at his house while attending to his fish tank. Antoine is going for a business trip and wants Deuce to take care of his fishes and home while he is away. Deuce promptly set fire to the kitchen and destroys the expensive fish tank. He kept the fishes in household containers, mixers, and other kitchen equipment😊. T. J. Hicks (Eddie Griffin), a pimp, helps him in making enough money to repair all damages, otherwise, the aggressive Antoine would kill him upon his return. The solution is simple, become a gigolo in Antoine's absence. He was given a total makeover by Hicks😊, and a valuable advice "never, ever, fall in love."

Deuce then begin to meet very strange clients, like ladies with narcolepsy (sleeps anywhere, anytime), Tourette's syndrome along with coprolalia (sudden jerking body movements called 'tics' with uncontrollable obscene verbal outbursts), a very obese woman, and a very tall lady having pituitary gland disorder. Deuce somehow satisfies all of them but not through sex. He finally meets another beautiful client, Kate, with an artificial leg with whom he falls in love. During this time he was chased by Chuck Fowler, a detective, who had a lot of insecurities with his body and Deuce helps him in overcoming it. But he was finally caught and produced before a Court of law, but upon hearing his case the Honorable Judge found out that he is not guilty and lets him free. All his clients testified in favor of him. All of them helped Deuce in repairing the damage at home by the time Antoine returns.

Antoine enters the house, taps the cheap glass of the repaired aquarium, and it broke. All hell broke loose, Deuce was saved by a series of funny interventions, Antoine was arrested by Fowler who made his appearance at the right time. That's it!

Full of fun, made us lol!
A cool movie!
They made a sequel to this movie "Deuce Bigalow: European gigolo." Will try to watch this too asap.

Interesting, here are some characters that we rarely see in most of the common movies like Deuce's dad who is a janitor and is proud of his job, the ladies with unusual medical disorders, the insecurities of beautiful ladies and successful men. Never felt bored, lol a lot! Very funny tips about dating, understanding men, women, and love, great!

LOL! ðŸ˜Š

Dr. NO - a book review

Dr. NO by Ian Fleming is a wonderful book to read. James Bond and Ian Fleming, the man who created this amazing character need no introduction.

I am a fan of James Bond and Ian Fleming. I have with me the whole collection of his books as well as the movies. Seen all of them in the cinemas over the years. Watch them whenever I feel like even now.

James Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the killings of a British spy and his secretary. He encounters a reclusive Dr. Julius No who lives in a nearby secluded Crab key island, who was responsible for the killings. Finally after many twists, turns and suspense James Bond finally destroys the island and Dr. No gets killed.

Originally written as a screenplay and named as 'The Wound man' this story was adapted for the first movie titled Dr. No in 1962. Starring Sean Connery as James Bond, Ursula Andress as Honey rider, Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No and Bernard Lee as "M", the film became a huge hit.

Great book!

Shopping malls in Bangalore, South India

Last month I visited Bangalore. Bangalore, an IT hub is a metro city in South India. It is in the State of Karnataka.

Mantri square mall is another mall we visited. It is also awesome! So many outlets, both Indian and international. Walked and walked, became tired.

http://www.mantrisquare.com

We enjoyed a joyride in the metro that started operating recently. Metro in Bangalore is named as 'Namma metro', meaning our own metro. It was a comfortable journey. All neat and clean, magnificent! We boarded the train from the MG Road station and traveled up to Baiyyappanahalli and back. Thumbs up! Excellent.

Next is the Orion mall! This too is wonderful. Seen Debenhams, Pepe, Wrangler, PVR Cinemas etc.etc. Adjacent to this mall and World trade center there is lakeside promenade residential apartments. Beautiful!

UB City is a very famous place in Bangalore, in South India. It is an upscale joint development venture of the UB Group and Prestige Group. This project has developed into a city within the City with very tall buildings and towers where Yahoo, Apple hold their Offices. The mall is located at the lower levels and is very spacious having outlets of Jimmy Choo, Rolex, Burberry etc.  A wonderful spa is also there.

The food court has multi-cuisine restaurants. We enjoyed Subway rolls! Yummy!

Dubai museum - an awesome place to visit!

Dubai Museum is in Al fahidi street in Bur Dubai. It is located in Al fahidi fort, the oldest fort in Dubai.

In the courtyard of the museum, we can see canons, traditional dhows called 'abras', a traditional well etc.

Inside the museum life in the emirate before oil discovery is depicted with realistic voice and video. There is also an exhibit of a partially built 'dhow'. The Dhow is a traditional boat. They were very much skilled in building dhows during that time.  So many artifacts also are exhibited. Many antique items are also on display.

The nearest metro station is Al Fahidi.

Dubai museum is an important place to visit in Dubai.

Marina mall and the Emirates palace, Abu Dhabi

This post is about the Marina mall, a beautiful mall in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE and Emirates palace hotel.

From Dubai, it takes about 45 minutes by road to reach Abu Dhabi. This city is undergoing a total makeover with numerous iconic structures being constructed. Some like the Ferrari world has already been completed.

There are outlets of so many international brands in Marina mall like Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Rolex, to name a few. Over time, this spot has grown into a hub of shopping, entertainment, leisure, and fashion.

Some stats:
  • The total area of Marina Mall is 2,35,000 sq meters
  • 4000 car parking spaces
  • About 400 retail stores
Marina mall, it is all at the mall!   http://www.marinamall.ae

Try to visit this mall if you ever go to Abu Dhabi.

Marina Mall is located on the Corniche road close to the Emirates Palace hotel. The view of the Emirates Palace from here is awesome!

Emirates Palace hotel is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. It is owned by the Government of Abu Dhabi and managed by the Kempinski group. 3.9 billion GBP was the approximate cost of construction! The Palace occupies 850,000m² of floor space. Gmail update, tabs, a cool feature!

Good news!

Gmail has introduced a new tab system to categorize emails. Before all the emails containing conversations, notifications, updates etc. were filling our inbox. Decluttering and making folders for categorizing them, required a lot of time. I experienced this problem when I joined G+. All the G+ notifications were pouring into inbox making it difficult to find other important messages.

Thanks, Google, we now have the tabs in place. They have introduced this feature very recently.

The tabs are   PRIMARY          SOCIAL            PROMOTIONS           UPDATES      FORUMS
By default, the first three are present when we open the Gmail inbox. There is a + sign after the PROMOTIONS tab, clicking it will open a window through which we can add the last two tabs if needed. Easy...!

PRIMARY - Person to person conversations.

SOCIAL - Messages from social networks, media-sharing sites, online dating sites etc. G+ notifications will go here.

PROMOTIONS - Deals, offers, and other marketing emails.

UPDATES - Personal, auto-generated updates like confirmations, receipts, bills etc.

FORUMS -  Messages from online groups, discussion groups, mailing lists.

Cool feature! One of the best!

Thanks ...Google!

Dubai metro, enjoy a ride

Dubai Metro is considered as one of the best in the world. The fully automated metro began their services on 09/ 09/09. Everything is computer controlled, no drivers at all! Two lines, red and green have become fully operational. With its introduction, the road traffic congestion has lessened in this booming world-class city. The ride on the metro is really awesome!

Most of the iconic structures in Dubai are visible along the way. The trains run smoothly and efficiently.

If you are visiting Dubai enjoy a ride on the metro. There are single trip tickets, one-day full fare card, and rechargeable long-term cards. The Metro officials were extremely helpful to assist passengers.

There are platform edge doors that will open only when the train arrives at the station. No open platforms anywhere, all fitted with platform screen doors. The platforms including the cabins are fully air-conditioned.

The metro is well-connected with all the important landmarks in Dubai. The third picture from the top shows the walkway connecting the Burj Khalifa station and the Dubai Mall.

Beautiful metro!

Google plus comments, make them bold or in italics!

You all might have noticed me writing comments on Google plus making text fonts bold, in italics, combined or strikethrough.

How did I do it?
  • To make the text bold, I typed Asterix first and then the text I wanted and at the end, again I typed one more Asterix in the comment box. Then I clicked Post comment.
For eg :   *This picture is awesome.*

You will see the comment saved like this with text in bold - This picture is awesome.
  • To write the text in italics I typed _ (underscore, pressed shift and then pressed - ) first and then typed the text I wanted and finally at the end, again the same _ was typed in the comment box. Then I clicked Post comment.
For eg: _This picture is awesome._

The comment will be saved like this with text in italics.    This picture is awesome.
  • Now, I will show you how I combined both ie bold and italics together.
                *_This picture is awesome._*

After clicking Post comment, the comment will look like this.  This picture is awesome.
  • Next, how to strike through?
Easy, first I typed a minus - then typed the text and then again a minus  - and clicked Post comment. the text will be seen strikethrough.

-This picture is awesome.-      This picture is awesome.

One important thing to note - do not add a space after the Asterix, underscore and minus.

Iddali - a South Indian dish!

Iddali (Idli) is a delicious south Indian dish.

The above-shown platter contains standard sized idlis, very tiny idlis (cute, isn't it?), sambar, and a fried extra hot chilli ðŸ˜Š. Sambar is a vegetable stew like that contains potato, ladies finger, tomato, big onion, various spices etc. Very flavorful dish!

A special steamer rack that has very small depressions is needed to make small sized Iddalis. Iddali is made by grinding rice and urad dal (black gram) and kept fermenting overnight. A little salt is also added to the dough during preparation. Various methods are prevalent in different regions and the ingredients also may vary from place to place. Nevertheless, Iddali is a wonderful dish enjoyed by everyone here.
I like iddalis very much!
There is a side dish which is a must, of course, that I haven't shown here! Chutney (Chammanthy), made by a paste of coconut scrapings, chilly and salt. Here too, there are so many methods with different types of ingredients.

Yummy!
